How to Calculate Tiles Step by Step Using Example Values

- Waste allowance: 10%
- Tile length: 60 centimetres
- Tile width: 60 centimetres
- Tiles per box: 4
- Price per box: ₱850
First, calculate the total surface area:
Surface area = 5 m × 4 m × 1
Surface area = 20 m²
Convert each tile dimension from centimetres to metres:
60 cm ÷ 100 = 0.60 m
Calculate the area of one tile:
Tile area = 0.60 m × 0.60 m
Tile area = 0.36 m²
Divide the surface area by the tile area:
Exact tiles before waste = 20 m² ÷ 0.36 m²
Exact tiles before waste = 55.56 tiles
The calculator rounds this base requirement upward:
Tiles before waste = 56
Now apply the 10% waste allowance to the unrounded requirement:
55.56 × 1.10 = 61.11 tiles
Round upward again:
Total tiles required = 62
The additional waste quantity is:

How to Use the Calculator Correctly
Measure the surface length and width in metres. For a wall, enter its horizontal length and vertical height.
Use the identical-surfaces field when several areas have exactly the same measurements. For example, enter four when calculating four equal bathroom walls.
Select a suitable waste allowance. The default is 10%, but a straightforward layout may need less while diagonal patterns, irregular rooms or tiles requiring many cuts may need more.
Enter the manufacturer’s nominal tile length and width in centimetres. Do not enter 0.60 for a 60 cm tile because the field expects centimetres.
The tiles-per-box and price-per-box fields are optional. If both are available, the calculator estimates boxes and cost. Confirm these figures from the package or supplier because box coverage varies between products.

The waste calculation uses the exact, unrounded tile requirement:

This approach prevents early rounding from unnecessarily increasing the waste calculation.
Choosing a Waste Allowance
A waste allowance accounts for cutting, breakage, imperfect pieces and future replacement. Ten percent is a useful planning input, but it is not correct for every installation.
Simple square rooms with straight layouts may have limited waste. Diagonal placement, patterned arrangements, niches, columns and multiple corners often create more offcuts.
Buying a small number of spare tiles can also be useful because the same design, shade or production batch may be difficult to obtain later. Ask the installer whether the selected waste rate is suitable for the actual layout.
Box Information and Product Markings
Do not assume every box containing similarly sized tiles covers the same area. Verify the number of pieces, nominal dimensions and intended use printed on the packaging.
